Which Welsh castle is right for your wedding?
Wales has everything from exclusive castle hotels where the entire wedding takes place under one roof to historic ceremony-only spaces where the reception needs to continue elsewhere. They may all look dramatic in photographs, but the experience, accommodation, timings and wet-weather options can be completely different.
I am Carl, a South Wales wedding photographer specialising in relaxed, natural coverage. I have photographed real weddings at Hensol Castle, Craig y Nos Castle and Castell Coch, so this guide combines first-hand photography experience with current information from the venues themselves.
Venue arrangements change, particularly at protected historic sites. This guide was reviewed in September 2026, but always confirm availability, licensed rooms, capacity and access directly with the venue before booking.

1. Hensol Castle
A complete castle wedding near Cardiff
Hensol Castle combines the scale and character couples expect from a castle with the practical advantages of an established wedding venue. It sits within the Vale Resort estate in the Vale of Glamorgan, within straightforward reach of Cardiff.
The Oak Room gives winter and wet-weather ceremonies an atmospheric interior, while the castle frontage, lake, jetty, courtyard and grounds create plenty of photographic variety. Those locations sit close together, so we can create portraits without losing an hour of the drinks reception.
Hensol’s official information currently highlights 23 individually styled bedrooms within the castle and the facilities of the wider 800-acre Vale Resort. This makes it particularly useful when guests are travelling or couples want the celebration to feel self-contained.

2. Craig y Nos Castle
Historic character on the edge of the Bannau Brycheiniog
Craig y Nos Castle sits near Penycae in the Upper Swansea Valley. It works well for couples who want a castle hotel with distinctive interiors, accommodation and mountain surroundings rather than a polished city-centre atmosphere.
The Adelina Patti Theatre is the feature most couples remember. It gives the ceremony a setting unlike a standard hotel room, while the castle exterior, grounds and surrounding landscape provide options for relaxed portraits. The venue currently advertises ceremonies, receptions and accommodation on site.
I have photographed weddings here in changing South Wales weather. The castle’s interiors mean the photography does not depend on a perfect forecast, while a short outside session can be fitted around any useful break in the weather.

3. Cardiff Castle
A castle wedding in the city centre
Cardiff Castle offers an unusual combination: remarkable historic interiors with hotels, transport and city-centre celebrations immediately outside the grounds. Its official wedding information lists spaces including the Banqueting Hall, Drawing Room, Undercroft and Guest Tower rooms.
The venue currently describes options for intimate groups of around 30 through to larger celebrations of up to 100. Licensed rooms and reception use vary, so couples should match the room to the ceremony, drinks, meal and dancing they want.
4. Fonmon Castle

Fonmon Castle is in the Vale of Glamorgan, close to the coast and Cardiff Airport. The venue states that three areas are licensed for weddings: the Grand Library, the Watch Tower Folly and the Scented Garden.
That choice makes it attractive to couples considering either an intimate indoor ceremony or an outdoor setting with genuine castle character. Ask the venue how each space fits your guest numbers, reception plan and wet-weather alternative.
5. Caerphilly Castle

Caerphilly Castle is one of the most visually dramatic historic sites in Wales. Cadw’s venue information lists the Great Hall as licensed for wedding ceremonies and civil partnerships, with published capacity information for functions.
Restoration and development work has affected wedding availability, with Visit Wales reporting that the Great Hall was unavailable until 2027. Confirm the current position directly with Cadw before making plans or booking suppliers.
6. Castell Coch
A storybook setting for a small ceremony
Castell Coch rises from the woodland above Tongwynlais, close to Cardiff. Its colourful Gothic Revival interiors and compact scale make it very different from a modern hotel or exclusive-use country estate.
When wedding hire is available, the Drawing Room is used for small civil ceremonies. This is a ceremony venue rather than a complete reception venue, so couples normally continue their celebration elsewhere. Access time and approved photography areas need to be planned carefully.
Current availability: Cadw has reported that it cannot accept wedding-hire requests at Castell Coch while essential conservation work is carried out. Check again directly before planning your date.
I keep family groups concise and use short, relaxed portraits so couples can enjoy the castle within the available access time.

A historic alternative
St Pierre Country Club in Chepstow
St Pierre is not marketed as a traditional castle venue, but its medieval church, stone archways, historic manor buildings and extensive grounds create much of the atmosphere couples are looking for when they search for a castle wedding.
It is also a complete hotel wedding venue, making it a practical alternative to ceremony-only heritage sites. I am a recommended photographer at St Pierre and have photographed weddings there throughout the seasons.

Questions to ask before booking a Welsh castle wedding
- Is the castle licensed for your ceremony, reception or both?
- Does venue hire include exclusive access or will visitors remain on site?
- Which rooms and grounds are approved for wedding photographs?
- How much access time is included before and after the ceremony?
- Is there a strong indoor plan for rain, winter darkness or high winds?
- Where will guests stay and how will they travel between venues?
- Are there restrictions on confetti, candles, music, drones or decorations?
- Is the castle accessible for guests with limited mobility?
A castle’s appearance matters, but the flow of the day matters just as much. A venue with several nearby photography locations and a clear wet-weather plan often produces a more relaxed experience than a spectacular building with very limited access.
My photography approach
Castle photographs without missing your own wedding
Castle venues offer dramatic architecture, but the photographs should still feel like the two of you. I document most of the wedding naturally, organise family groups efficiently and give straightforward direction during couple portraits.
Portraits normally take around 10 to 15 minutes. At larger venues such as Hensol or Craig y Nos, we can use a second short session later if the light or weather changes. At ceremony-only sites such as Castell Coch, we agree a tighter plan before the wedding.
Full-day wedding photography is £1,500. Combined photography and film coverage is £2,500. Both options are available for 2027 and 2028 weddings across South Wales and the rest of the UK.

Planning a castle wedding in Wales
Which castle wedding venue is closest to Cardiff?
Cardiff Castle is in the city centre. Hensol Castle, Fonmon Castle and Castell Coch are also within the Cardiff and Vale area, although the type of wedding and current availability varies considerably.
Which Welsh castle venues offer accommodation?
Hensol Castle and Craig y Nos Castle both advertise accommodation as part of their wider wedding offering. Cardiff Castle, Caerphilly Castle and Castell Coch are historic attractions rather than conventional wedding hotels.
Can we legally marry at a Cadw castle?
Only certain Cadw properties and rooms are licensed for civil ceremonies. Cadw currently lists Castell Coch, Tretower Court and Castle, and Plas Mawr among its licensed sites, while its Caerphilly Castle venue page lists the Great Hall for ceremonies. Availability can change during conservation work, so confirm directly with Cadw.
What happens if it rains at a castle wedding?
It depends on the venue. Hensol and Craig y Nos offer useful interiors and covered areas. Historic ceremony-only sites may provide less flexibility, which makes access times and approved indoor photography locations important questions before booking.
How long will castle wedding portraits take?
My couple portraits normally take around 10 to 15 minutes. I plan the closest useful locations beforehand so the architecture adds atmosphere without keeping you away from your guests.
